Alaska Raptor Center Wildlife Interpreter/Tour Guide
The Alaska Raptor Center seeks Wildlife Tour Guides for Alaska’s premier bald eagle treatment center and educational facility, with is also one of the state’s premier visitor attractions. The Alaska Raptor Center is located on 23 lush acres in the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska, nestled between mountains and the sea. We educate and entertain approximately 25,000 visitors each summer. Candidates must be enthusiastic, outgoing and have a willingness to work hard. Candidates must be willing to do public speaking (we will train). This position is a great educational opportunity: You’ll learn about eagles, owls, hawks, falcons and Alaska’s rainforest, and share that knowledge with others. The job includes a wide variety of duties, including:
- Guided Tours
Greeting guests and educating them about Alaska’s wild bald eagles and conservation. Guiding tour groups through our facility, giving stage presentations, discussing hospital procedures outside our clinic or manning one of the outside stations by the displayed birds (rain or shine), talking about the birds and answering questions. We have a wonderful opportunity to educate approximately 25,000 visitors each summer – and each guest is invited to become part of our organization, as a member, volunteer or supporter.
- Customer Service and Sales
Retail and customer service in our gift shop and ticket booth. Performing cashier duties in our gift shop, which include operating the cash register, stocking the merchandise, tagging, cleaning and assisting with displays as needed. Must be able to give correct change and balance the bank at the end of a shift.
- Janitorial Duties
Janitorial duties to insure that our facility is visitor-ready at all times. The wildlife tour guides’ daily routine includes cleaning the restrooms, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning all display cases and counter areas, taking out trash, sweeping the deck, making coffee, stocking educational materials and maintaining this tidiness throughout the day.

The candidate for this position MUST have prior retail and supervisory experience
The Retail Coordinator is responsible for inventory control, monthly reporting related to retail sales and inventory, merchandising and stocking the store, keeping summer staff on task when working in the Gift Shop. Shop and store room cleanliness and any other details related to running a smooth retail operation. This includes working with the Executive Director to ensure that everything needed to run a quality shop and catalog/web effort is in place. This requires overseeing the seasonal staff to ensure a clean and well-stocked facility, and quality customer service.
The Retail Coordinator is responsible for updating the retail pages of our web site as merchandise levels change. Preparing web and mail orders are also the responsibility of the Retail Coordinator.
STORE MERCHANDISING & STOCKING – The Retail Coordinator will be responsible for merchandising and stocking the store in a manner that is appealing to the public eye. This will also include keeping the store clean and tidy. The store must be fully stocked at all times. During the summer visitor season, additional help will be provided to assist with stocking, cleaning and retail sales.
WEB SALES – All orders must be filled and mailed within a reasonable amount of time. This will vary depending on when the order is received, but will usually be one to two days from the date of the order.
Communication – The Retail Coordinator role includes a responsibility and willingness to communicate openly, actively and forthrightly about the Gift Shop operations with the Executive Director.
SPAN OF CONTROL — The Retail Coordinator works with the rest of the team to ensure smooth operations of the Center and that guests of the Center receive a quality and rewarding experience. The Retail Coordinator will be responsible to assure that all aspects of the retail effort run smoothly and professionally.
As with all positions at the Center, the Retail Coordinator is expected to be flexible to assist in other areas as needed and as assigned.
EXPECTATION and COMPENSATION — The Retail Coordinator position is a full-time, seasonal, hourly position. Some weekends and holidays may be required. This position will start on April 1st, or other date mutually agreed on, and will end on September 30th. The qualified candidate will be expected to be available for the entirety of the season. The wage will be DOE.
