Organization Description:
The Alaska Raptor Center (ARC) is a unique, multi-faceted non-profit organization located on 17 lush acres in the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska, nestled between mountains and the sea. We are an avian hospital and sanctuary as well as an educational facility and tourist attraction. Beginning modestly in 1980 as a backyard effort fueled by the tireless compassion of dedicated volunteers, we have grown into a first-class operation with year-round employees, a variety of Raptors-in-Residence, and an impressive campus in Sitka, Alaska.
The Mission of ARC is to promote and enhance wild populations of raptors and other avian species through rehabilitation, education, and research. The Board, staff, and volunteers of ARC strive for excellence in service to patients, members, visitors, donors, schoolchildren, retail customers, and other beneficiaries of our work.
Position Description:
The Business Director reports to the Executive Director and provides financial, human resources, and administrative leadership to ensure that the Alaska Raptor Center’s business operations run effectively, efficiently and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The Business Director oversees our small but active administrative team and works closely with the Executive Director on projects related to fundraising, marketing, and organizational development.
Qualifications:
-Business Management / Business Administration Degree or equivalent education/experience specifically in Business, Finance, or Accounting.
-Leadership/supervisory experience preferred but not required.
-Personable with exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
-Solid knowledge of accounting, financial practices and the accounting cycles. Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles.
-Ability to establish, prioritize, and manage tasks and projects concurrently and meet deadlines reliably.
-Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn new applications such as QuickBooks and specialized donor management software.
Key Responsibilities
Financial
-Evaluate, build and maintain financial controls and implement improvements where opportunity exists.
-Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable ensuring the accurate accounting classification of transactions and submission to bookkeeper (outsourced service).
-Gather and submit reports, statements, documents and other requested materials for annual tax filing and audit (outsourced service).
-Manage incoming donations, including accurate tracking and timely donor correspondence and recognition.
-Prepare various financial reports for Board of Director meetings and upon request of the Executive Director.
-Oversee and streamline where appropriate other essential business functions such as records-maintenance, insurance and license renewals, services and subscriptions.
Human Resources
-Develop, update and carry out HR practices and policies.
-Provide oversight and leadership to direct reports.
-Assist with recruitment and onboarding in accordance with HR practices and policies.
-Review and manage biweekly timesheets for submission to bookkeeper for payroll (outsourced service).
-Administer employee relations and benefit programs.
Assist the Executive Director
-Serve as representative for the Alaska Raptor Center in the Executive Director’s absence and provide leadership support at their direction.
-Schedule and attend meetings, prepare and distribute materials and record minutes.
-Provide general support with promotional, marketing and fundraising projects.
