AVIAN HANDLER

General Description

The Alaska Raptor Center (ARC) is the premier avian rehabilitation hospital and sanctuary in Alaska. Each year, we admit hundreds of injured and orphaned raptors and other wild bird species.  Along with our patients, we also care for 24 non-releasable avian ambassador birds. The Avian Handler works within a team setting under the direction and supervision of the Avian Director.  The Avian Handler carries out educational presentations both at the Center and offsite at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal.  They will also conduct basic avian husbandry duties and may assist with some training programs.

Responsibilities

  • Present educational programs to the public both on and off-site using avian ambassadors.
  • Prepare diets for avian ambassadors and patients, which involves processing whole prey (including deer and bear occasionally).
  • Conduct daily cleaning, sanitizing and upkeep of avian enclosures and the clinic.
  • Assist with implementing a variety of bird training and enrichment plans for our avian ambassadors.

Qualifications

  • At least 1-year experience in raptor training and handling required.
  • Ability to demonstrate the falconer’s knot.
  • A team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Safety conscious, detailed-oriented and willing to follow instructions.
  • Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Respectful, patient and considerate with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Excellent time management and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work effectively and take initiative under minimal supervision.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Up-to-date tetanus vaccination.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays and on-call work.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those required by an employee to successfully perform the functions of the job:

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, crouch, climb and reach overhead.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability and willingness to work in inclement weather.

Position Type and Duration

  • Seasonal full-time (40 hours per week)
  • Flexible start date in early-to-mid April
  • Position ends September 30th

Compensation

  • $17.00/hr.
  • Shared, furnished, offsite housing will be secured for our seasonal staff. Rent is $300 bi-weekly inclusive of utilities and Wi-Fi.
