Sunset was found near her nest as a four-month-old chick by a Sitka resident, already badly injured and unable to fly. ARC staff discovered her left wingtip was just hanging on by a piece of skin and could not be saved. X-rays later revealed metal fragments, telling us that she had been shot. Because this injury took away her ability to fly and survive on her own, Sunset can never return to the wild and now lives in the open-air eagle habitat with Titan.

Sunset is the only Bald Eagle to ever lay eggs at the Alaska Raptor Center. Each spring she and Titan build a stick nest on the ground and she lays 2-3 eggs. We usually let her sit on them for a short time, then we have to take them from her as we are not permitted for eagle propagation.
