Sable is a Gyrfalcon/Peregrine Falcon hybrid. She hatched in 2008 under human care near Spokane, Washington, and was trained as a falconry bird. Sable flew for 14 seasons, successfully hunting hundreds of quarries. Now retired, she has found a home at the Alaska Raptor Center to be cared for (and adored!) in her golden years.
During her first year of hunting, Sable was attacked by a Bald Eagle—an encounter that typically ends badly for the falcon. This eagle, however, underestimated Sable. She fought back fiercely, surviving the attack with damage to the right side of her chest. The eagle also survived the encounter, though not without leaving battered and bloodied.
