In 2015, Narwhal was admitted to Mt. McKinley Animal Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska after being struck by a car along the highway. The collision damaged his left wing and scraped one of the feather tufts off the top of his head. After several months it was clear that, although he was able to fly, his wing beats remained too loud for him to silently swoop down on live prey. He was deemed non-releasable and joined our ambassador team.

Narwhal is a funny name for a Great Horned Owl, but it seemed the obvious choice when we realized he only had one of his feather tufts! Thank goodness feathers grow back. He now has a full set and often shows them off to visitors.
