Didi

Peregrine Falcon

Didi came to the Alaska Raptor Center from a falcon breeder in Spokane, Washington. Hatched under human care in 2019, she worked closely with people as both a falconry bird and breeding peregrine falcon. After retiring from these roles, Didi found a new home at the Center, where she helps visitors learn about peregrine falcons, falconry, and raptor conservation.

Peregrine Falcons are remarkable birds of prey and the fastest animals on Earth, reaching speeds of more than 200 miles per hour during hunting dives called stoops. Peregrine populations declined dramatically from the 1940s through the 1970s due to DDT, which caused eggshell thinning and reproductive failure. Thanks to the DDT ban, legal protections, captive breeding, and conservation efforts, peregrine populations have made an extraordinary recovery.
