Every individual matters and has a role to play in this life on Earth. —Dr. Jane GoodallEducation at the Alaska Raptor Center focuses on connecting people with birds of prey through engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Our staff offers daily programs, guided tours, and interpretive talks that introduce visitors to raptor biology, conservation, and the challenges these birds face in the wild. A key part of this mission is the Avian Ambassador team—raptors that cannot be released due to injury—which help illustrate natural behaviors and adaptations up close. By combining wildlife rehabilitation with public education, the center fosters a deeper understanding of Alaska’s ecosystems and inspires visitors to play a role in protecting them.

Education
From May through September
Southeast Alaska’s cruise season brings a significant influx of visitors, making it our busiest time of year. During this period, the center welcomes more than 100,000 guests and provides daily guided tours. Visitors gain insight into wildlife rehabilitation efforts, observe Bald Eagles in flight at the Suzanne and Walter Scott Flight Training Center, and experience close-up encounters with avian ambassadors. These programs offer memorable wildlife experiences while promoting a deeper understanding of raptor conservation and the importance of protecting Alaska’s unique ecosystems.
Education
From October through April
The focus shifts to tailored educational programs for the local school district, outreach with visiting high school athletic teams, and engagement with the Sitka community. This season also features a variety of special events, including the annual Owlidays celebration held just before Christmas. During Owlidays, local children take part in interactive, raptor-themed activities with a special emphasis on owls, fostering curiosity and appreciation for these remarkable birds.
